1Ocean-bound plastic

Plastic Bank operates under the global standard defined by Jenna Jambeck. Ocean-bound plastic is defined as plastic that has not yet found its way into the ocean but is classified as "mismanaged waste". That is, plastic that is not being (formally) collected, is not likely to be collected, and is found within 50km of an ocean-bound waterway or coastal area.

2Community Members

Individuals within a recycling community who collect plastic and exchange it at a Plastic Bank collection branch for secure income and life-improving benefits.

3Equivalent Bottles Stopped

The amount of ocean-bound plastic collected and recycled in our recycling communities converted into bottles. Conversion rate is 50 bottles per kg (the average weight of a 500mL bottle is ~20g)

4Recycling Communities

Community of plastic collectors living within 50 kilometres of ocean-bound waterways involved in plastic collection and its exchange at Plastic Bank collection points.

Alchemy™

Alchemy is the blockchain platform that powers the Plastic Bank app. It enables fully traceable recycling processes, secures income for recycling community members and tailors impact reports for our stewards.

Plastic Bank’s Partnership with Aquasale

Aquasale partners with Plastic Bank to bring sustainability to dinner tables around the world.

Aquasale’s sea salts are bringing authentic Mediterranean flavour to tables and plates while supporting the fight against plastic. Plastic is used in the packaging of sea salts to ensure the highest quality and protection. Because of this need for plastic, Aquasale has partnered with us to offset the plastic used in their sea salt packaging. Each Aquasale product purchased will stop 10 single-use plastic bottles from entering our world’s oceans. Since the beginning of our partnership, we have stopped over 100,000 kilograms of plastic from entering the ocean, the equivalent of over 5 million single-use plastic bottles!

Every pinch of Aquasale salt helps protect the ocean while improving lives

Environmentally-friendly packaging strategies are integral to Aquasale’s mission to optimize recyclable packaging into their supply chain while reducing waste. Currently, approximately 90% of Aquasale sea salt packaging is made of recyclable mono-material  plastic. By 2025, Aquasale’s goal is to increase this to 100%. So far, our partnership has impacted over 53 communities and more than 300 families across Indonesia.

We are proud to partner with Aquasale to make positive environmental, social and economic impact in vulnerable coastal communities while providing high quality food products around the world.
